Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Review

Based on the jump in artistry between “Into” and “Across”, I can only assume that when “Beyond” comes along my head will literally explode from the visual intensity.

Rarely will a film need a number of rewatches to be fully understood. There’s just so much.

So much so that I found it almost overwhelming at times. No wonder my five year old – who is very good in the cinema bless her – got fidgety and only liked some of it. I think away from the bombast of a big screen and sound we’ll be able to watch it again and take a lot more in. I mean, who doesn’t want to see a T.rex slinging webs?

Voicework, design, parental issues, teenage issues – Across the Spider-Verse hits a lot marks dead on. From Miguel’s stoic anger (little one thought he was a bit scary) to Samberg’s knowing narration, the cast brings so many different forms of Spider to life with such joy.

But…is it actually better than Into the Spider-Verse? Right now I don’t think it is. Though this might change with more viewings, and more importantly, a complete story.

Many people believe Empire Strikes Back is the best in the original trilogy. But they say that with the whole trilogy/story in their head. A cliffhanger, or unresolved plots, don’t matter when judging it. It can be seen as part of the whole and picked out. So with “Across” being the middle part, I need to know the rest before I can fully judge.

But, I laughed and whooped a lot. I shared plenty of “how cool is this!” looks with my daughter whilst sharing just as many “I understand these parents” glances with my wife. That goes a long way.

The Spider-verse films, to my mind, are elevating animation in way I haven’t seen before. Wonderful things. This is how you do the multiverse!
