Uncharted Review

It took so long to make this film that Mark Wahlberg aged out of playing the main charcater and became the older supporting character. Fourteen years from inception to release!

Was it worth it? No. And Wahlberg isn’t right for either role anyway.

Tom Holland has a sincerity and physical ability that is endearing, so whilst he’s miscast, he’s at least watchable. I know Nolan North and Nathan Fillion are both too old for the role now. But there’s something more cynical about Nathan Drake. An edge alongside the wisecracks. And whilst Holland can mix a cocktail impressively, and I truly believe he can hang onto a ledge for an unfeasibly long time, he doesn’t have that edge.

The bigger problem is that whilst slavishly matching the games feels redundant, moving too far away stops it being “Uncharted”. Few adaptations manage it, so this film not getting there isn’t a big shock. I understand why the story bases itself around a main set piece from the games. That’s the thing from the thing I know! But there’s an absolute lack of danger or thrill. At no point did I feel that anyone would get hurt, and worse, it wouldn’t have bothered me if they did. There’s an inertness to it all. A blandness. Fourteen years and it’s massively, maddeningly, meh.

The games are amazing, play one of those instead.
