Trolls Band Together Review

Attempting to recap what I can remember from the first two entries in the Trolls trilogy leads to a big old shrug of the shoulders. The first one was alright. The second one I recall being annoying. Neither were particularly memorable, hence you’ll not find a review for either on this site.

You’d think it might be reasonable to assume that the third film (how?) would leave a similarly small impression on me, despite it receiving a review possibly suggesting otherwise.

Trolls Band Together does do something memorable. Rarely do I watch a film that is so devoid of…anything. An absolute pile of nothing.

Everything is horrendously obvious, with each story point signposted to within an inch of its life. There’s not growth. No bigger message. Nothing of any substance. TBT is essentially a series of small music videos bolted together with scenes where characters talk at each other.

You could say that it’s a kid’s film so it doesn’t need to be more. But that’s insulting to kids. A film can have morals and messages without diluting how fun or cute it is. That both my wife and daughter had far more to say about the most recent Paw Patrol movie should tell you a lot.

Animated films have been so strong recently, luxuriating in their ability to change style and show us literally anything. TBT can’t even manage its more trippy sequences with any kind of conviction, as though it’s glancing at creativity as it passes it by on the way to some easy half term money.

I’m not even upset that I’ve seen it! There just isn’t enough content in it to care either way.
