The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Review

I enjoyed 2023’s Mario movie, despite what a lot of people had to say about it. I called people lazy in their criticism, with fundamental misunderstandings of what the film was meant to be.

For its sequel I’m afraid to say the critics might be right. And that’s down to one thing I think.

They skipped a Super Mario World story.

You had Yoshi right there as the literal Easter Egg to lead into a second film. But he’s introduced and added to the team extremely quickly in the pursuit of more things. And then more things. To the point where people are tracking down people who are tracking down people. People are who newly introduced only to be side-lined almost immediately.

The film is bright and energetic and fun. It has more “remember these” moments, particularly from Super Mario Bros 2. It zooms along. But it doesn’t linger and doesn’t give anyone a chance to really show themselves. If Nintendo/Illumination are building a universe, then they didn’t learn from the DCEU. Every issue could have been avoided by using this story to introduce Yoshi and battle Bowser Jnr. It didn’t need the rest and suffers for it.

Super Mario Galaxy isn’t a bad film. But I might end up thinking more highly of the special cups my wife bought us all than the film itself. A missed opportunity.
