If asked beforehand, I’d have told you “I don’t think I’ve seen many David Fincher films”. Consider me corrected. Of the twelve films he has directed, I’ve seen nine. Thinking back, there’s always a measured, perhaps calculating way to how his films are pieced together and presented. The Killer definitely leans into this, and maybe even winks at it.
A perfectly cast Michael Fassbender is the titular killer, who to me is hilarious. A paragon of precision, calm, and logic, a job gone wrong leads him along a very different path as he struggles to cope with a mistake made and a life threatened.
At several points I was reminded of video games. Particularly stealth games. You start out with the best intentions, but at some points things go wrong and you have to make a mess to sort it out. Watching this apparently methodical (as he tells us anyway) assassin completely fuck up a couple of times tickled me unexpectedly.
Some will struggle with the pacing, or the lack of dialogue, or the murky morality. But personally I found The Killer to be very interesting and engaging.
