This is definitely a film that I watched in 2026. Considering it’s box office underperformance that could be taken as a kind judgement.
It is not the fault of Milly Alcock, who neckbeards on the internet will have you believe is some awful creature not deserving of the role. Her Kryptonian has had a very different life to a certain boy scout, providing an interesting counterpoint. She is hurting and she’s struggling to reconcile with a new life.
It is the problem of the script. A script which doesn’t focus on the right things whilst striving to feel as dull as possible. It’s no good trying to be a James Gunn-lite. Have you own voice! Do your own thing. I’m positive this story could have landed with a punch rather than a tickle if it had the strength to back itself and really commit to Supergirl’s situation.
Instead we get a film chock-full of contrivances, stupid choices, and an overall feeling of “I’ll barely remember this tomorrow”. I never questioned Alcock as Kara Zo-El. But I constantly questioned how this film got to being made when it was clearly so meh. I hope to see Supergirl again, but based on this I doubt it will be in another solo adventure.
