I said hey. What’s going on?
Yes, good question. Because this is an odd one. Likely a short review!
I’m not a Street Fighter guy (Tekken is my jam). I played SF2 back in the day, and I know my Hadouken from my Shoryuken. But I don’t know all the newer characters. So all I can say is that it feels like there’s a tonne of reverence for the games in the latest Street Fighter movie. A lot of love in the poses and looks and music. But I also get the feeling that if you’re a really big fan of the games, you’re going to be annoyed.
This film is averse to making decisions. Who to focus on. Who to include. What story to actually tell. I’m not sure how a film manages to be nearly two hours long and feels both slow and rushed. When it comes to visuals it’s brilliantly wacky, with characters sporting all the unrealistic costumes and hair you expect. So it looks funny, but it is never actually funny. It’s such an odd situation. Add in some weird ADR moments and you have a film that decided on a visual tone but didn’t match it to the script.
Can it be entertaining and fun? Yes. I do genuinely applaud Guile’s hair! But Street Fighter falls between the two recent Mortal Kombat films in how it manages to give us a tournament, but not show all of it. 1995 Mortal Kombat is still the best fighting game by a margin.
Maybe it will get a sequel. Most of the cast are well chosen and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of them. But this film feels like one my school reports. Has potential, but if only it could focus.
