Self Reliance Review

Recently I’ve really got into physical media. I want to build a curated selection of films that leave me less reliant on the streaming and their nonsense. But streamers can still be useful sometimes. Sometimes the algorithm can throw up an interesting piece that isn’t just the next bit of content.

Enter Jake Johnson, write and director Self Reliance, a quirky film with a message on how to live. We know him as Spider-Man and the dude on a desk in Jurassic World. Now we also know him as someone who does “goes a bit demented looking” decently too.

He’s put together a story that kept me intrigued throughout, always second-guessing moments and intentions as I looked for more in it. Which is probably it’s biggest issue. Though it does an entertaining job and I remained interested up to the end, it’s ending doesn’t – and perhaps never could – live up to what came before. It feels a bit anti-climactic, even if it makes sense and fits the theme of the film.

Feeling like he got his famous mates to help out (I have no idea who are friends or not), people you know pop in for some fun scenes before being on their way. Much like the film.

I won’t be getting a physical copy of this for the collection, but I’m glad I stumbled across it.
