It’s well known that I’ll watch Ryan Gosling in anything. But if you add in stunning space visuals and a heartwarming relationship with an alien? Then you have my favourite film of 2026 so far. It’s going to take something special to topple it too.
This is going to be a short review. Because you should go watch this film. It has excitement, humour, and sentimentality. Somewhat like the best Spielberg films.
That so much of it was made in camera helps for sure. CGI is a wonderful tool, but you can’t beat having something real to respond too. And my goodness does Gosling nail it.
I don’t know where the books are pitched but this feels like science fiction for the masses. If The Martian showed what humans can accomplish together, Project Hail Mary shows that “together” doesn’t just have to mean humans. It should be embraced. Go see it!
