Mighty Doom Review

*I’ve updated this review twice already, and will continue to update it as time goes on*

You know I love DOOM. The games at least.

But in a move that will no doubt make plenty of people groan, there’s now a mobile DOOM game! Like the system it’s on, this Slayer is smaller. Chibiesque even. Aw! Cute lil Slayer.

He’s no less violent though mind you. Leaning very much on the DOOM Eternal version of the iconic character, Mighty Doom is full of everything you might want. All his weapons and aesthetic are intact, along with the enemies and other characters such as the Night Sentinels.

From a pure gameplay point of view, Mighty Doom is good fun. Movement is your main concern, as the Slayer is always shooting as long as enemies are present. Special weapons are the only other thing you control. Like a Roguelike you start each run fresh, picking up upgrades as you go, which makes each run unique.

Through the various menus (we’ll get to this) you can choose a primary, a secondary, a special, and a grenade. These, alongside your suit, are upgradeable. The grind to build them all up is the main thrust of the game. Though with some cool music, and nice little touches like how the Slayer’s leg waggle in the air when he hits a jump pad, it’s good fun.

Back to the menus. Mighty Doom is absolutely hellbent (haha) on getting your money. Menus urge you to improve your demon slaying ability through several in-game currencies. They sure have some balls though, charging nearly £15 for an alternate Slayer costume with some stat buffs. If anyone pays that…well fair enough I guess. Four months in I’ve spent around £30, which considering the sheer amount of time and enjoyment and chat I’ve had around it, seems perfectly reasonable.

I’m a big boy and I can make a choice, though I always have concerns how these tactics in mobile games might tempt younger folk.

As time has progressed, the MD team have been consistent in both their communication and their updates. The level cap has already been raised, as has the upgrade capabilities for weapons and equipment. In addition, the levels have expanded horizontally and gained some very old-school upgrades like Berserk and Haste. It’s great to see the game grow.

The Slayer continues his ravenous hatred. He charges onward, unrelenting in his never-ending quest for vengeance. And he continues it in good form, even if his head is bigger in relation to his body. Just mind the menus.
