Stupid jet pack ending aside, I rather liked the first Kick-Ass. It was violent, funny, and very aware of how silly it was.
It’s no surprise that it got a sequel. I can’t comment on the comics it’s based on, but Kick-Ass 2 manages to shed all of the wit and charm of the original. In its place we have poorly paced and uncertain story; it’s never quite sure what it’s going for.
Now with names like “The Toxic Mega Cunts”, I’m not expecting anything too high brow. But with Kick-Ass now buff but boring, there’s a complete over-reliance on Hit-Girl. She’s cool and capable, but the shock of a small girl killing thugs is gone. The villains…are just meh. Revenge is a perfectly acceptable motive, but they just don’t add up to much. A poorly judged rape joke doesn’t help things.
The supporting cast could have been entertaining had they been given more to do. I’m not surprised that Jim Carrey put a miles between himself and the film upon completion. I wouldn’t be surprised if he realised he’d been sold a pup and wanted nothing to do with it.
If I didn’t feel so apathetic towards this film I’d be really annoyed by how rubbish it is. As a theme, escalation has been done before. That the natural response to heroes is villains in the same fashion. Perhaps if it has committed to an idea, Kick-Ass 2 would have a clue what it was doing.
