Inside Out 2 was good, but overall recent Pixar films have felt fairly lacklustre to me. But the trailer for Hoppers had me intrigued. It appeared to be self aware, referencing it’s similarity to Avatar. It also seemed to be a bit weird, in a good way. So I was genuinely excited to see the film instead of what has recently felt more like an obligation.
It might not be a Finding Dory or a WALL-E. but Hoppers is great fun. The core idea is interesting, and whilst there is a good message in there, the film is much more interested in being weird and a bit manic. And I am absolutely here for it. The further in we go, the more unhinged things become. To the point where some of it had me questioning the U certificate.
Having the ability to talk to animals leads to a lot interactions. One such interaction made the entire cinema gasp. I really value those type of moments. The shared experience, which for a time made me forget about it being the Easter holidays and other kids apparently being able to run rampant.
I can see us watching this again when it’s on Disney+. Hoopers is a good length, doesn’t muck about in telling it’s story, and important isn’t afraid to be silly.
