I’ve always had a soft spot for this one. With Jolie’s prowling and confident performance matched by Freeman’s usual charisma, McAvoy is great as he apologises to all and sundry as a seemingly pathetic individual who has no idea what he’s up to.
Throughout I found myself wondering how I’d react to the situation Wesley finds himself in. His reactions feel spot on; a mix of disbelief and fear ultimately morphing into confidence and purpose.
There’s a message about taking control and living your life tucked in here but really it’s a hugely fun and cool looking action film.
Only two issues come to mind. In the opening sequence the chap we’re focused on is meant to be a supreme assassin; yet to me he just looks like a geezer from the local who if it weren’t for the suit could be a football hooligan. His abilities don’t match his visual. Then there’s McAvoy’s occasionally slippy American accent.
Ultimately neither of these matter. It’s over the top and nonsense at times but who cares when it’s this entertaining.
