Thor: Love and Thunder Review

“Directors need to be controlled sometimes”

Taika Waititi – 2022

Couldn’t have said it better myself Taika.

Thor’s been through a lot, and he’s now the first of the original big three Avengers to move beyond a trilogy and onto a fourth solo film.

So it’s a shame that whilst it can be entertaining, the 29th MCU film is a mess, completely wasting several potentially special story arcs.

If only someone had controlled you Taika. If only someone had told you to stop cramming more things in.

There are some fun moments, and Bale makes for an unsettling villain. But there’s just too much going on. Tonally it’s a complete state. Gorr, Valkyrie, and Jane could all have had a film or show to themselves. And why not? Marvel TV is everywhere all the time! Instead they were short changed. And Thor himself? It’s arguable he hasn’t changed at all.

In many ways Love and Thunder sums up the entire Phase 4, stumbling forward with no clear goal other than more more more. The MCU is still an entertaining universe, but it’s not as marvelous as it once was.
