The Witch Review

The Lighthouse was confusing and Nosferatu was haunting. With two Egger’s films in the bank, and both being at very least intriguing, I needed to find and watch his other two theatrical releases. The Northman will come along soon, but The Witch is only ninety minutes long!

In terms of performance, the deepness of Ralph Ineson’s voice, and even more so building a world, The Witch is excellent. A Puritan family trying to make it on their own in a harsh world, you can feel how tough it is. The loneliness and struggle is tangible. So when strange and horrible events start occurring, it’s not a shock that the family starts to turn on each other.

My experience so far tells me that Eggers doesn’t make films that easily pigeonholed. It’s a horror film, but it’s not a scary film. Unsettling? Maybe. But there aren’t any jump scares, and you won’t struggle to go to bed after. Some expectation management for you there.

I was engaged from the off, but as the story reached it’s conclusion, I think I wanted more. I get that that’s not the point; it’s more about the journey there. But as someone who likes conclusiveness, it made the ending feel a bit lacking. Nevertheless, you should give this a go, especially if you’ve seen any other Eggers films.
