They say that behind every great man there’s a great woman. Never was a saying more apt.
The odds that the Hawking’s defy are matched by the sensitive and brave performances given by the lead pairing.
Redmayne gradually contorts himself into an amazing likeness but never loses the wit, stubbornness and cheekiness that makes Hawking so enigmatic. Jones deserves as much credit though, portraying a woman with hidden strength who not only cares for her husband deeply but also pushes him past what everyone expects.
There’s no getting around it, this is a hard watch at time. But it’s dealt with in a compassionate way.
As much a great love story as a biopic of that well-known voice.
