The Marvel’s Review

Phase Four of the MCU was mid as hell. Following Endgame was a big ask, but overall it was muddled and stank of not really knowing what to do. Phase Five quickly followed – though if you could tell them apart fair play – and three films in its again been hard work.

Guardians 3 was perhaps the best MCU entry since Thanos was defeated, with a clear end point for it’s characters. So the MCU is still capable of being great.

But it isn’t with The Marvels, which is the first film I’d say is harmed by the pumping out of TV shows.

It is funny in places, and the interplay between the three Marvels is both entertaining and heart-warming. There’s nothing wrong with a lighter tone or a shorter runtime. But it’s a mess of a story, with a complete nothing of an antagonist, and shonky CGI.

Having seen WandaVision (three years ago) but not Ms. Marvel, I appreciated the film trying to keep me up to date. But it felt forced and a symptom of the MCU pumping out content.

Thing is, the MCU isn’t the nailed on viewing it once was. So making things so dependent on eachother just makes the situation worse.

Mid Marvels more like.
