The Fall Guy Review

I know nothing of the TV show this film is based on, bar it starring the 6 Million Dollar Man Lee Majors.

What I do know is that I bloody love me some Ryan Gosling. Crazy Stupid Love, Drive, The Nice Guys, La La Land…Ken. Yes I swoon. He’s charming and can sing/dance/act. What a bastard. But all this means that I’m pretty much nailed on to see any film he appears in nowadays.

First things first, Gosling is great. Get the swooning out of the way now. Great mixture of physicality, charm, and dead-pan delivery. The film centres on his stunt man’s relationship with the director of the film he’s working on, and he’s matched by an equally charming Emily Blunt. I absolutely buy their chemistry.

As a film about a stunt man, directed by a former stunt man, I can confirm there are stunts. And a lot of good ones! There’s a real affection for the craft here, even acknowledging the ridiculous situation of there being no Oscar for the profession. Boils my piss. Stay through the credits for some behind the scenes of the various action scenes.

So it’s funny and entertaining. But there’s a but. Your mileage may vary, but I felt The Fall Guy went on a bit too long. Liked it half peaked and then went again. Story wise I understand it, and I might be being too harsh. But chop a little out and the pacing would be spot on.

I took my wife to this film on a date night, and for that it was perfect. A nice easy watch with good looking people doing cool stuff.
