“I’ll check out the inevitable sequel when it comes around.”
Well, it took me a while but I eventually watched it.
For the first time ever Denzel Washington revisits a role, and though it may not be the most hard-hitting of roles in an emotional sense, it most definitely is in a violent sense!
I don’t know much about the original TV series, but the story here leans heavily into the idea that Washington’s McCall wants to help people, and will go to great lengths to see it through. It feels as though the story wants to focus on this, spending over half the run time on McCall’s interactions with those around him. But…Hollywood? There has to be a bigger threat, and it takes the shape of Pedro Pascal, who I’m pretty sure is not the right age to have been in the military at the same time.
*Quick Google*. Pedro is 47 whilst Denzel is 67. So…unlikely. I’d watch Pedro read a phonebook so I’ll give him a pass.
Two films trying to compete leads to a muddled affair. But the action is decent, and well, it’s Denzel. Perhaps the third film (yep, confirmed) can lean fully into the Equalizing.
