We’ve all seen this story played out before, but this one managed to pull me and make me care.
Bill Murray’s grumpy old man routine is pitch perfect. There’s just the right amount of snarl, a glimpse of heart, and perfect timing. It’s a performance nicely tempered by the 100% not annoying Jaeden Lieberher.
The story swerves several times, threatening but avoiding falling completely into schmaltz. Unfortunately its quest for a nice ending does leave several large threads annoyingly unresolved, but when Bill Murray is being funny and dramatic like this some faults can be overlooked.
