Resident Evil: Vendetta Review

Resident Evil: Vendetta

The cinema releases are awful, with wasteful takes on characters we know. But Capcom have gone completely the other way with their computer generated home releases, slavishly emulating the pattern of the games. Resident Evil: Vendetta continues this trend.

The story doesn’t get time to dig into anything, so ends up being really obvious. In some ways I like that it’s like a condensed game; it hits all the marks, and is an easy watch. It’s cool seeing Chris, Leon, and Rebecca, though it seems to hit story points already covered in the main games, with their struggles over the seemingly never-ending array of BOWs.

But the dialogue is cringy, and if you’re not called Chris, Leon or Rebecca you’re out of luck. That’s mainly because all of them are pretty much superheroes at this point, with Leon in particular pulling off some right crazy shit.

The CG is pretty good, until you get to the mouths. They’re weird; like the animators weren’t sure how much they needed to move to make a word. This makes emoting hard for any of them. In true RE fashion, people rarely dress appropriately!

The biggest plus is a hallway scene showing off some cool gun fighting. Take the gun kata from Equilibrium, add in a healthy dose of John Wick style Judo and grappling, with a sprinkling of bonkers gymnastics, for something very entertaining. Chris and Leon both use moves from their respective games too. Nice to see their personalities reflected in their fighting.

I’ve come to terms with the ‘middle trilogy’ favouring action, so I can appreciate this a little more now. Still, Resident Evil: Vendetta is harmless. It takes the games and faithfully recreates them in 95 minutes. A simple watch, but that’s not long enough to leave a huge impression.
