You know those evenings where you end up flicking through various platforms hoping for something to grab you? And how that exasperation can be compounded by a partner or friend ‘not feeling it’?
Well not this time! Upon watching a trailer for The Gray Man, my wife and I both commented on our affection for Ryan Gosling. She’s fancied him for years, and I’ll admit to a little crush myself. Then she discovered that I hadn’t seen Remember the Titans.
The trailer was watched and I was excited. We found it on Disney+. Done!
Why so fast though? Well, the trailer showed a mixture of story threads mixed in what amounted to a sports story with all the usual tropes intact. I’m an absolute sucker for getting heavily invested in characters and situations, and that trailer ticked all the boxes.
Sure enough, 1 hour and 54 minutes flew by, and I loved it!
From the funny character moments (Gosling being a goofball), to how every character isn’t perfect but tries – apart from that guy who can absolutely do one – I enjoyed getting involved and wanting the Titans to make progress. Both on and off the field.
I wanted to be part of that team. And I wanted Denzel Washington to coach me.
I celebrated the triumphs and struggled through the challenges. I may have shouted at the TV and my wife through sheer investment several times.
Remember the Titans is billed as being ‘based on a true story’, so liberties are taken and things are changed for dramatic affect. But this is a story for the ages, as important now as it was on release twenty-two years ago. There’s a lot of heart, and there’s a lot to learn. And I’m here for it.
