I have no doubt an action film starring Paul Bettany looked like a good idea on paper.
He’s got the chops and can be intimidating (see Gangster No. 1). The idea of the Church gaining control of the remnants of humanity after an apocalypse of sorts is pretty good too. Sadly it suffers from being extremely tedious; so much so I had to read Wikipedia to remind myself of the ending!
Priest’s biggest issue is its tone. Look at it for two minutes and you know you’re looking at something in the same ballpark as Equilibrium. Despite this, the film continues to chase a serious and dour tone. It should have embraced the outlandishness of its world. It would be a lot better for it.
