“a product of such poor quality that it makes me think there should be no more Predator films”
The Predator Review – 2018
“Prey gives me hope again”
Prey Review – 2022
Hope is now confidence, as the director of Prey, Dan Trachtenberg, returns with the first of two (TWO) further Predator directorial efforts this year with Killer of Killers. An animated anthology created using the Unity Engine, it’s further proof that Trachtenberg knows what he’s doing. Roll on Predator: Badlands later in the year!
With the different time periods and varying styles we’re introduced to here it feels as though there’s a plan. A plan to work on a much larger canvas that avoids recycling “bigger Predator” as an idea.
KoK is an impressive looking feature that can stand alongside other recent lookers such as The Last Wish, Wild Robot, and Spider-Verse. It’s enjoyable seeing the freedom of animation being leant into, as it allows some interesting visuals and set pieces.
I really enjoyed it! Set across three time periods, we meet several new warriors who take very different forms. A Viking. A Ninja. A pilot. What’s cool is how they each confront a Predator that matches their time and style. We get to see the strength and ingenuity of humans against these hunters. We also get more lore!
I didn’t realise immediately, but there are two cool voice actor choices. They don’t change the film but both are a nice touch. And one of them is now a new admission to the “killed by a Terminator/Alien/Predator” hall of fame.
These hunters have varying builds, looks, and approaches. Maybe those having a problem with the Badlands trailer will now understand that Trachtenberg is working on broader ideas. Ideas that will allow him to do far more than just roll out the classic Jungle Predator again. With all kinds of time periods and tech showing up, the Predator franchise is ripe for more stories. Hopefully we’ve left nonsense like The Predator far behind now.
