Out of the Furnace Review

Out of the Furnace touches on a variety of interesting ideas; Conditions in the economically declining rust belt, post-traumatic stress and the bond between brothers.

Unfortunately it only skims the surface. This leaves it to the strong cast to bear the weight as they make up for the scripts shortcomings.

Bale and Affleck’s chemistry as brothers contains all the ribbing and banter you’d expect whilst Harrelson and Dafoe are ever reliable. The film is dripping in sadness, pain and loss. For what was and what will never be. Its power is undeniable but it should have delved deeper.
