Oh Pixar, what is going on with you? Are Mickey and co interfering a bit too much?
Brave didn’t impress and felt very much like a standard Disney film. After films such as Finding Nemo and Wall-E you come to expect a lot.
So, with Pixar tackling their first prequel, this time to 2001’s Monsters, Inc. can Pixar pick things up again?
Yes and no. It might be stronger outing than Brave but it’s a notch down from the best.
The first film seemed to focus more on Sully, but this time the spotlight is firmly on Mike (who is very cute as a 6 year old) and his dream of becoming a scarer.
The fraternity that Mike joins is built up by an amusing and loveable bunch of losers, whose various personalities and frailties make them very relatable. Can they come together and help each other be all they can be? Can Mike and Sully get over their differences?
Being a prequel does steal away tension. We know how it’s all going to pan out. But I found plenty of moments touching and funny, and never felt like the film was dragging.
Several scenes are highly exhilarating and I found myself holding my breath in suspense several times. Being entertained is not a problem.
Monsters University is a good film. It’s funny and entertaining, with some great monster designs. Kids and adults alike should have good time. But, it isn’t in the upper echelon of Pixar films.
P.S. Oh! I’d be remiss to not mention the obligatory Pixar Short, shown before the main feature. The Blue Umbrella uses improvements in Pixar’s technology to create some astonishingly lifelike scenes. I won’t ruin it for you, but it’s another touching mini story and a corker.
