Magic Mike Review

The marketing for this film is quite misleading I’d say. Sure, there is plenty of male flesh on display. But to say this film is about stripping would be wrong.

Stripping provides an entertaining backdrop for sure but the story, and what got me invested in the film, is the different approaches to life the main characters have and how that leads to growth for some, and stagnation for others.

Though the whole cast is strong I have to make special mention of Tatum and McConaughey.

Tatum, whose younger years as a stripper are used as a base, is a likeable guy as Mike. He is understanding, confident and helps his friends no questions asked. Tatum imbues him with a charm that makes you want things to turn out alright for him. Easily the strongest performance I’ve seen from him.
Oh Matthew. He’s had quite the roller-coaster career but is on a hot steak right now. His turn as Dallas the strip club owner is just brilliant. Hard nosed businessman mixed with a team captain. I want to work for him! But I wouldn’t want to cross him. When you’re being courted by Christopher Nolan for his next film you now you’re doing well.

The strip scenes themselves are well presented, and bar a slow moving Kevin Nash are energetic and entertaining. The other half was suitably impressed and I felt a need to do some press ups!
Don’t underestimate this film, it’s a lot better than it’s marketing makes out.
