It’s interesting to rewatch something when you can see how it fits into the whole rather than just being the next instalment. The first Iron Man is excellent, whilst I seem to like it’s sequel more than most. Yes it got a bit muddled on approach to the Avengers assembling but it’s fun, with some top-tier Iron Man and War Machine interplay.
Post assembly, the expectations for the first MCU character to get a trilogy were huge! Financially it didn’t disappoint, but people had issues. They didn’t like how the Mandarin – one of comic book Iron Man’s biggest enemies – was handled. There didn’t seem to much appreciation for representing him fully accurately would be…culturally difficult at best.
I never really shared those concerns. Trevor Slattery was funny! And it made for a twist that seemed fitting of the time, and still does.
Following his trip into a wormhole, Tony Stark is a troubled man. His ensuing erratic behaviour threatens his relationship with sweetheart Pepper and brings the full force of The Mandarin, and others, upon him.
Sans suit for most of the film, Tony’s relationships (new and old), entertain as well as propel the narrative. Proving that post Avengers you didn’t need the whole gang to thrive, Iron Man 3 showed real growth; it’s just easier to see now than thirteen years ago.
And Johnny Cage is in it!
