Hairspray (2007) Review

I’m a well known sucker for catchy tunes and characters to get behind. It’s why I thought I’d like High School Musical despite being far too old to initially see and enjoy it.

That film ended up being fine. This one is much better.

Based on a show that’s based on a film, Hairspray is a story of being true to yourself, chasing your dream, and racial integration. Yep, I didn’t know it was going on such a possibly fraught subject either. It could have been heavy-handed, preachy, or just outright offensive. But Hairpsray is so boppy and breezy that even if things don’t seem completely right, you just roll with it.

I knew John Travolta played a woman and I wondered how would go down seventeen years later. Turns out the same character is performed by men in all versions. Not only that, that there’s no fuss around it. Just a guy in drag. And it was fun! The entire cast is game, from Walken singing to Bynes being horny the whole time. Good sets of pipes all round.

And this time they don’t dub Efron.

Turns out it’s true. You can’t stop the beat.
