Ben Affleck is so damn watchable when you can tell he’s connected with the work he’s doing.
Finding The Way Back is absolutely riddled with clichés. But if you focus on that, and not the performance of a man who is intimately familiar with the issues facing his character, you’ve missed the point. This film is entirely about Affleck and the subtle depth he brings.
From his affable drunk, to his frustrations with what’s happened to him, it fundamentally works.
Now, that’s not to say the story around him is anything special. The tale of someone coming back to a thing they loved and it saving them is an old one. No newer is the sucky sports team turning things around. You’ve even got the usual mixture of kids, from the quiet one to the cocky one. But I can’t be too mad about it. Not when it’s made with care and everyone is committed.
Will it change your world? No. But he’s so damn watchable.
