Though it lacks any real bite, Universal’s needless rewriting of the Dracula mythos is nonetheless a perfectly OK distraction for ninety minutes. Evans makes for a convincingly troubled hero, all furrowed brow and quietly commanding tones, and holds everything together valiantly.
The aesthetic is great, with some beautiful sets. Then there’s Dracula’s armour, which has an interesting texture to it. All of this did its best to help take my mind off at least one unconvincing casting choice.
With some grisly deaths and a simply told but solid story you could do far worse. The ending feels (and was) tacked on but at least it doesn’t outstay its welcome. Decent Friday night fodder.
