Four MCU films were released in 2021. Then three in 2022, and another three in 2023.
In 2024 there will be one MCU film. Deadpool & Wolverine. I’ve written this part of the review before seeing the film, as frankly I’m excited. Which makes a nice change after recent years of the Marvel machine chasing quantity over quality. There’s been some good stuff, but this is a big change in approach. It’s a nice change.
Between it being the only MCU release this year, and Jackman and Reynold’s history, this film is unsurprisingly getting a huge push. Those boys have been EVERYWHERE. Buzzfeed puppies. Hot Ones. Every talk show and YouTube channel you can imagine. The stars have aligned, Reynolds got his man, and now they’re together, in colour, in the MCU. Thank God Disney growing their Monopoly and gaining more licenses eh.
From suit reveals, to cameos, there have been so many trailers and promotional bits. I’ve heard Like a Prayer a lot. But is it any good? Let’s go to future Chris who will, in standard non-spoiler fashion, let us know…
LET’S. FUCKING. GO.
I’m excited! I had such a good time watching this film, as did my wife. We consistently laughed and gasped throughout. I also shrieked several times, to the point where she told me to be quiet.
Expectation management is always important and I suggest you have a think before going in. For this film I’d set the bar at “I want it to be fun”, and my goodness was that expectation met. It smashed through that bar with just the first scene and kept going.
This is the Deadpool and Wolverine a lot of people have wanted to see for years. On the big screen, my wife beside me with her themed cup, I just let it wash over me. I didn’t want to think too deeply or consider story implications. This watch was entirely about the feels and I bloody loved it. There’s a tonne of stuff you hoped would be there. Some you maybe thought could be, and then a tonne of stuff you would never have guessed.
At this point in comic book films nothing is off the cards.
The Reynolds/Jackman chemistry is spot on, which isn’t a surprise if you’ve seen them together. It’s got heart. But the insults and in-jokes don’t hold back one bit. From corporations all the way to personal details, nothing is safe, and it’s brilliant.
I’ll give this film a revisited review at some point I’m sure, but my initial feeling is that anyone who doesn’t enjoy this film was likely never going to pick up what it’s putting down. Cinema can be brash and graphic and childish and a million other things. Understand what you’re seeing and calibrate accordingly. You’ll be so much better off for it.
You’re about five-hundred words in so you must have some interest. Just go see the damn thing, and give yourself permission to have a good time in the cinema. Roll with it. If you’ve been watching these films since the first X-Men film came out, there’s a lot of love here for you to enjoy. They’re finally doing the things! Deadpool and Wolverine mocks everything. But it’s never mean about it. It’s here for us to enjoy. Even if you don’t agree with it’s choices, you can’t argue it’s intent.
Is this film going to “save the MCU”? Who gives a crap! Go watch some swearing and violence and wish fulfilment, made by some people who have wanted to for years. And if you don’t want to get into all that, well don’t fucking go.
