Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers Review

Oh Andy Samberg. My TV, music, and film spirit animal. From SNL, to The Lonely Island, to Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Storks and Palm Springs – I’m picking up what’s he putting down.

Could a Disney+ reboot of a 90’s cartoon show finally trip him up? Nope!

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is a fast and fun tale with roughly one million cameos that director Akiva Schaffer uses to celebrate animation in all its forms. From designs roasted by the fanbase through to beloved characters outside of even Disney’s Mickey Mouse gloved grip, the affection is clear.

Many of the deep cuts will go way over the head of the little ones, but for their parents…oh boy. I’m prime age for the content on display and I was ooohing and aaahing throughout. It’s only 90 odd minutes long too, so yay for films which don’t outstay their welcome.

With characters set up as actors in this universe, and our main characters taking on an IRL mission, the big comparison is Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Is it on that level? No. Could the sheer amount of cameos and Easter eggs be seen as negative? Yes. But with an easy chemistry between the chipmunks, I liked it, even if at times it’s very much a game of ‘spot the thing’.
