CHAPPiE doesn’t do anything beyond it’s obvious references. But it does do enough to be both entertaining and heartfelt, if a little gratuitous at times.
The characters are two-dimensional and generally of the bad variety, but Jackman’s frighteningly mulleted engineer is easy to get against.
A Johnny 5/RoboCop hybrid, CHAPPiE himself is a wonder, both technically impressive and naively charming. His growth is great to watch, but the film chooses bombast when it should have chosen to be more intellectual and thoughtful. A worthwhile view but neither as awful nor amazing as some are suggesting.
