There’s nothing brave or new about this film. Among the now thirty-five films in the MCU, Captain America: Brave New World is definitely one of them.
I like aspects of it, whilst not being blind to the situation of both its production and the world it’s entering. Captain America 4 is watchable and doesn’t offend. But there are questions. They all stem from decisions, which unfortunately are usually bad ones.
With Sam not struggling, all the marketing being based on Red Hulk, and using The Leader when he has no links to either Cap, just reeks of not understanding the assignment. This isn’t and shouldn’t be Incredible Hulk 1.5. All wrapped up in a film that desperately wants to be political whilst choosing neutrality.
Who knew that keeping character decisions on your streaming platform to bump up the numbers would lead to having to explain them again?
And for goodness sake, stop with the questioning! Sam Wilson is Cap! Get over it.
Anthony Mackie is great. I enjoyed watching Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres. That’s a partnership I’m absolutely onboard with. Harrison Ford does as good a job as he can coming in to carry on Thunderbolt Ross’s story. And whilst I’m frustrated at the Hulk 1.5 theming, I can’t resist enjoying seeing story threads finally get wrapped up. A bit. It’s just a shame that it’s nearly two decades later and needs a completely new hero to work through it.
I fundamentally have a lot of issues with Brave New World. For many people it will be an entertaining film. But! But! Constant buts. Marvel can do better by it’s characters for sure.
