1995-2007. I’d always considered this a barren time for Disney Classics.
Lately however I’ve been proven wrong. Dinosaur was terrible, but Atlantis joins Brother Bear and Mulan as a Classic I was wrong to ignore.
It’s oddly adult, without the usual catchy songs and cute animals sidekicks to distract us from the mass destruction, treachery and looting that takes place.
Tone aside the animation style is striking and still feels modern, whilst Michael J. Fox and Don Novello both give stand out performances as Milo and Vinny. Atlantis didn’t find it’s audience in the cinema but it’s well worth watching now.
