I’ve seen three M. Night Shyamalan films—The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and After Earth.
Split confirms that, for now at least, After Earth is an aberration when it comes to me and this much-maligned director. It’s full of tension and mystery for a start. And then there’s James McAvoy.
His transformations into the different personalities residing in the same body are amazing. That shaved head of his forms a canvas upon which he paints various characters. Hedwig, Dennis, and Patricia are all immediately clear purely by facial expression.
Mr Shyamalan’s films haven’t generally blown my mind, but I’ve never understood the hate either. Split is a decent film, held up by a strong central performance.
