Introduction to Web Comics

Over the years I’ve become aware of and started to read web comics. So quickly morphed in ten plus as I followed recommendations. Some have become permanent residents on my bookmarks tab, with new content impatiently waited for and devoured, whilst others have fallen to the wayside through boredom, constantly slipping schedules or a mix of the two.

I’ve found some amazing stuff. With no one to answer too, artists and writers have let their imaginations run wild. It has resulted in some highly entertaining, crazy, funny and sometimes quite emotional content.

So I thought I’d share them with you! Maybe it will show you something you hadn’t really thought of before, reel you back in, or just show you some you’ve never seen.

Let me know what you think plus any suggestions in the comments! Without further ado here are my first few choices.

NOTE! – Comics come and go. All of these have copious backlogs, but I’ve noted if they’re still active or not.

Dinosaur Comics – Still going as of Dec’21!

How can a strip work for ten years using the same images every time? When it contains a somewhat self aware Tyrannosaurus Rex stomping on a car and a cabin who talks to a Dromiceiomimus, an Utharaptor, and sometimes God it can do what it likes. It’s astounding how many weird and wonderful conversations have taken place in the same setting.

Dr. McNinja – Wrapped up Feb’17

If the image below – of a ninja knife eye attack – doesn’t have you reading through this comic right now, then what the hell is up with you? Dr. McNinja has ninja’s, pirates, dinosaurs, monsters, unicorns, moustaches and plenty of Batman references. It’s as though Christopher Hastings has peered into my mind and pulled out everything I might think is awesome. Then he has mashed it all up together. It’s just mental, but it’s amazing for it. Strap in and hold tight, because this is a crazy strip.

The Trenches – Ended Jan’16

This is quite a personal one as I’ve been a tester! When I heard the creators of PvP and Penny Arcade were getting together to create a strip about testing I couldn’t pass it up. Isaac Cox seems to always make the worst choice, leading to some uncomfortable situations with his new colleagues. The strip mockingly shows some of the antics that take place between through testing and release. Each strip is also accompanied by a ‘Tale from the Trenches’, where anonymous people send in real stories regarding their game related careers. Quite an eye opener.

JL8 – Recently returned from hiatus as of Dec’21

I can’t remember how I stumbled across this, but I’m so glad I did. Yale Stewart completely understands what makes these characters tick. Replacing evil Gods and mad scientists with gym teachers and young love does nothing to effect the effectiveness of the characters. They are all written exactly as you’d expect a younger version of the Justice League too. Watching Bruce pull a batarang from his belt to deal with a party clown screams of what he’ll be doing when he’s grown up.

XKCD – Still going as of Dec’21!

Introduced to a this by a friend a year or so ago, I wondered at first if it might be a bit too clever for me. It deals with a lot of maths after all, and I scraped through GCSE. What I found though, was that maths was the tip of the iceberg. XKCD is equally touching and heart felt even though it just uses stick characters. Don’t let the intellect put you off as there is plenty of not just entertaining content here, but a lot of it is thought provoking.

Amazing Super Powers – Only two posts since Aug’15

Harsh but hilarious. Like watching Jimmy Carr, you feel like you shouldn’t laugh but can’t help yourself. ASP is full of surreal situations, and isn’t afraid to tackle any subject. AIDS, cancer, and suicidal sneakers. It’s all there. Make sure to hover your mouse to the right on each strip.

Boxer Hockey – No updates since Sep’14

Tyson Hesse has created a sport that I want to play. I don’t think I can give him a higher compliment than that. OK I’ll try. It looks gorgeous and is coloured beautifully. The sport of Boxer Hockey is not what it’s all about though, as the strip is gradually building up the history of the characters and dealing with large overall story arcs. It’s got a lot of heart, whilst throwing in a large chunk of downright weirdness.

So there we have it, a few suggestions to get you going. Feel free to share any you might find yourself or let me know what you think of these.
