Sometimes you just can’t get better than seeing a real person doing a real thing. A damn crazy thing.
Tom Cruise has recently signed off videos with “See you at the movies”. Top Gun: Maverick is about a pure a “movie” as you see. A full-on big screen experience that aims to thrill through every pore.
The action, drama, realism, and pure star power is all there to entertain. Maverick is written to hit all the right emotions within a clear and concise structure, with the added bonus of feeling no guilt over the non-descript bad guys.
Many will consider this another legacy film, similar in ilk to Jurassic World and The Force Awakens, but I’d argue it’s simply a belated sequel. The story brings in other characters but it’s 100% about Maverick. It doesn’t feel any need to get with the times or move on, despite the story touching on the inevitable movement of time and progress. Granted, Tom Cruise is doing his best to defy age and most franchises don’t have that to lean on. But its not trying to be something it isn’t, and benefits hugely from that.
I don’t care about Cruise the man. Cruise the actor is a force of sheer will, and I’d he’s one of the few true movie stars left. He’s willing to go all the way to give audiences what they want. And boy does it show. Every time you see the G’s pull at someone’s face, you know it’s real.
Or maybe it isn’t real? The line between CGI and reality is blurred to the point that I don’t know what’s what. And it doesn’t matter. Enough is real that it all is to me.
A Top Movie.
