Before I had a kid I would have enjoyed this film. I would have commented on how beautiful it is, with its distinct texture seemingly following on from the gorgeous Puss in Boots a couple of years ago. I would have mentioned how it pulls at the heartstrings, with found family and love big themes. And I’d recommend you watch it regardless of having kids to take.
But I do have a kid, so on top of all that I’ll say how this story fundamentally understands parenthood. How it can aggravate you, and make you stronger. The Wild Robot is a wonderful watch that choked me up multiple times. Scenes mentioning how parenthood can “void your warranty” or make tasks take far longer than planned hit home. But so do scenes where affection great affection or unexpected strength is shown.
The outcomes aren’t shocking, and it hits a lot the emotional beats you’d expect. But a simple idea executed well is often the best. DreamWorks can really knock it out of the park sometimes.
