With a story that zips along and plenty of exotic locations The Phantom isn’t entirely terrible. It’s just so cheesy! Be a fantasy adventure by all means, but why does everything need to be so hammy? I think Zane is a great choice for the main role. He’s very charming and has the physicality. It’s a shame that he’s wasted alongside the scenery hungry Williams as the villain.
Plenty is left unanswered and the ending relies on something barely hinted at in the story. The day is saved by complete randomness! On the plus side…Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat’s Shang Tsung).
I’d rather just watch The Shadow if I want a pulpy comic book film.
