Tekken Review

Having watched some bits on the history of how this film came to be, it was mentioned more than once that it wanted to avoid being like Mortal Kombat. No supernatural stuff. Grounded.

Then they get Shang Tsung to cosplay as Heihachi!

There’s not a whole lot of point digging into this too deeply. There is a lot wrong with Tekken (the movie).

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa is not one of them. He brings that same authority and presence that he did in Mortal Kombat, even if he isn’t quite as suited to the role. But putting that legend to one side, I’m trying to think of some positives to share and…some of the costumes are decent? I’ll be honest, Christie Montero’s “butt cleavage” was distracting.

Tekken is fundamentally flawed. From the basics of the story, to both who is pulled from the roster and how they’re utilised. How can you have a Tekken movie and not have King? No Hwoarang? How can you set up Law as an entry level dickhead? It doesn’t track with what we know of Tekken, or give us a lot of the things we want. I do not get Kazuya in white trousers with flame. And that makes me sad.

I have a lot of respect for the stunt crew and the choreographers. But the film they’re working so hard on isn’t worth their time.
