I don’t know if I love Superman. But I love this Superman.
The film may be full on and a lot to take in, but in terms of character I’m immediately onboard. This Superman might be the perfect representation of how I see the character. He gives me hope that this DCU has its head screwed on right.
David Corenswet’s Superman is the physical representation of “kind is cool”. In a world where even other film reviewers seem jaded and unable to see films for what they’re trying to be, Superman – both the film and the man – is unapologetic. Caring for others is a good thing. Valuing all life is a good thing. Trying your best, failing, and trying again is a good thing!
This is a Superman I can picture in any situation. From interacting with Batman and fighting Doomsday to helping a cat out of a tree or visiting a child in hospital. He isn’t all-powerful, burdened, or overly questioning of his position. Even when everyone around him is.
He’s a beacon. Someone to aspire to. Superman! Bright and bold and unapologetically inspired by all that has come before.
The story cuts out the usual preamble, showing faith that the audience will get onboard and keep up. It goes all out, using things that might usually be kept for a sequel. Like perhaps a Nolan film, we’re trusted to know the type of film we’re watching and follow a story that can feel almost overwhelming on first watch.
If you don’t like James Gunn’s directing and writing style you might struggle here. From some of the dialogue, to Krypto, it’s clearly his film. And like I said, there’s a lot to take in. It may prove to be too much, or perhaps it’s got a pleasing depth that makes it a strong rewatch. This is a post-MCU world, so hopefully the DCU learns some lessons from it.
This Superman is not woke, weak, or anti-anything. Piss off to X and chat with all the bots if that’s your thing. Superman is a film that celebrates being caring. Trying your best, stumbling, and trying again. Looking out for other people. Ultimately he’s kind, which is both exactly what Superman should be, and what we need to see more of.
