The biggest MCU release since Endgame, No Way Home is far more than ‘just’ the third film in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy. The fervor around casting and spoilers alone had been immense, which makes writing anything about it a minefield.
So I’ll boil this down to the essentials.
Is No Way Home a good film? Yes, it superbly balances old and new. It fits in well with the MCU whilst honoring what has come before.
Is it a successful third entry? I think on a pure entertainment level it’s the best we’ve seen of MCU Spidey. The story serves the characters and leaves them in very different (and better) places. It’s likely my favourite MCU Spidey showing too.
I’ve seen ‘fan service’ often used as a negative term. Yes, there have been a lot of sequels that look back and make use of nostalgia to bolster their impact. And yes, there are times when it just screams of cash grab or clueless storytelling (Rise of Skywalker being a truly awful example). But why shouldn’t fans be served? They’re the reason these things make money, and they’re one of the reasons why these characters are so beloved. So I don’t see the harm in giving them awesome moments and story points. What No Way Home does extremely well is do plenty of that but use it in conjunction with a top performance from Holland to move the character forward in an exciting direction that I think will please most.
A celebration of the past with a great look toward the future, No Way Home is the best MCU film since Endgame, and an easy top ten MCU entry.
