A guest review by my Brother Ben!
I never thought I’d watch Morbius. Having watched some reviews on YouTube I knew it was something I didn’t need to see. Fast forward two years, to the end of a weekend spent with two sick kids, where I discovered it on Netflix and thought “It must be morbin time”. There we go, got that out the way.
This film just gets straight to it! And by ‘it’ I mean an origin story that would have been merely fine in 2002. It’s a bit like Iron Man, and a lot of the MCU, in that the antagonist’s a palette swap of the hero. Same abilities, just a twisted morality. Unlike Iron Man, there’s no twist, or sense of fun, or charisma. Matt Smith’s Milo/Lucien is just a jealous sibling. He gains his abilities off camera with a quickly discarded whodunit.
I haven’t investigated it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if chunks of this film are on the cutting room floor. The police duo for example don’t do anything. So, it’s either written poorly or they’ve had scenes cut. Not that you can take Tyrese Gibson looking into the distance seriously in the slightest.
Edtior’s Note – Tyrese had several scenes with some kind of cybernetic arm cut from the film. Solid gut feel there.
Aside from the paper-thin story, it also directly rips from other comic book films. One scene shows Morbius surrounded by bats like in Batman Begins, with similar music. Another has him saying “I’m hungry, you wouldn’t like me when I’m hungry”.
I’ve got notes on my phone here that would let me rant for another 200 words, but I think you’re getting the gist here. At least it’s only a smidge over 90 minutes, not counting the haphazardly thrown in and awful credit sequences. I watched this film so Chris didn’t have to. He’s welcome.
Thanks Ben! I’ve dodged a bullet here.
