A film like Parasite sets a high bar. A bar that any follow up was unlikely to clear.
Mickey 17 doesn’t. But whilst Bong Joon Ho doesn’t offer any new commentary on humans and their effect on each other and their environment, it does enough to be worth a watch.
Between this, The Batman, and The Boy and the Heron, Robert Pattinson continues to make interesting choices. He manages to sound completely different in each one too. Then there’s Ruffalo, who tickled me in Poor Things and once again chews the scenery in entertaining fashion.
There’s nothing to really dislike about Mickey 17. But it might have been stronger if it had focused more. The story shifts between Mickey’s moral quandary and a race of aliens known as Creepers. They give us a classic case of “who are the real monsters”, but dealing with them gives us less time with the Mickeys. Perhaps it could have dug deeper had to not split its attention.
