Jurassic World: Rebirth Review

“if this is the best Jurassic can do now, it should go extinct.”

SDS Jurassic World Dominion Revisited

After the mess that was Dominion, I expected the franchise to take a break. Money would always ensure it’s return, but in what shape? For Jurassic World: Rebirth to arrive just three years later is a surprise. Such a speedy return made me wonder if any lessons has been learned. But with a new cast, smaller budget, and Gareth Edwards at the helm, I had some hope. I’m not silly enough to expect a classic, but an entertaining dino film would be a strong return to form after Dominion.

Rebirth is definitely that. The cinematic experience is hugely important to me, and my wife and I had a great time. We had a chat about it on the way home and we agreed that it ranks above Dominion, Fallen Kingdom, and 3. Time will tell how we compare it to World. Opinions can change with rewatches, and they often do! But to spend a couple of hours with a set of characters and creatures that made us gasp, whoop, and tense up often exceeded our expectations.

Will I uncover plot inconsistencies and nonsense in the future? No doubt! But I still don’t understand how the crew on the boat at the end of The Lost World died and I still manage to rewatch that. Perhaps for now vibes are all that matters.

Those vibes are a fun Dinosaur film with characters to cheer and jeer, alongside some cool set pieces. It also gave me Jonathan Bailey in slutty little glasses. That in itself is a big win.

Bailey’s charm aside I enjoyed the cast. Friend played “corporate douchebag” really well. And they didn’t overdo the cute mascot! So yay for restraint. Edwards knows how to show scale too. These dinos, even when they look horrific, are correctly shown as creatures. Not monsters or characters.

There will be more Jurassics. No point moaning about that. Instead I’ll take each one on its own merits. If they’re enjoyable, bonus! In that sense at least, Rebirth does a good job.
