My limited knowledge of this film had me thinking that it was going to be a straight-up martial arts movie. Ip man (Ip, not I P) is more like a biography as it details the Wing Chun master’s life during the Sino-Japanese War.
It’s all relatively superficial and dramatized, not really drilling down into any one aspect of Ip’s life. Donnie Yen comes across well as he juggles being a father and husband with some very impressive fight sequences. Fast hands!
A solid film overall, it may not have wowed me but I’ll likely give Ip Man 2 a try.
