There are some amusing performances to found in these woods, but among all the pantomime and drama the direction is lost. It’s a shame that this Disney adaptation loses it’s way the longer it goes on.
Into the Woods suffers from an odd tone, with several adult themes feeling like missed opportunities. If only they’d had the courage to follow through on them all.
Chris Pine stands out, chewing the scenery in pleasingly outlandish fashion through the only memorable song. Streep is impressively crazy but once the happily ever afters are over it becomes somewhat muddled and surprisingly downbeat.
Sadly, in the age of the crossover, Into the Woods fails to take advantage of it’s interesting cross story premise.
Into the Woods? More like Lost in the Woods! Am I rite?!
