With Sinners and Nosferatu my two favourite films of 2025 so far, it seems horror in it’s various guises is doing well. And it continues to do well with Frankenstein! Very pleasing indeed.
In terms of marriages between story and director, this feels like a match made in heaven. Though heaven has very little to do with things here. We all know the story, and there have been many interpretations over the years, so I don’t see much point digging into the differences. Instead I’ll focus on what I liked.
Oscar Isaac crosses the line into a camp a couple of times but overall he’s brilliant. Just the right level of manic and *****, with an accent that is well-judged for the character. Mia Goth is enchanting and gentle. But it’s Jacob Elordi as the monster (insert “Victor is the real monster” comment here) who brings it all together. His imposing height juxtaposes well with his doleful expression, displaying both the strength and purity of the creature.
The emotion is there. And I very much appreciate that it’s a two and a half hour film that feels two hour long tops. So pleasing! It’s a stunning world that I liked spending time in. Much like K-Pop Demon Hunters, this is another Netflix film that really felt as though I should have seen it in the cinema. They can do good stuff!
